Notables from Wheaton

Why did we include this seemingly odd aspect of Wheaton in a 5k race event website? That’s because a Who’s Who of notable people lived and worked on the race course or within blocks of it.

Here is a sampler of the more than two dozen sites where famous people lived in and around the course you’ll run on June 12:

Narnia

Remember the large wood wardrobe in the C.S. Lewis film “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”? The actual one used by C.S. Lewis is on display at the Wade Center. Clyde Kilby, 620 N. Washington St., was a college professor, author, founder of the Wade Center, friend of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Mr. Kilby helped purchase the wardrobe and it is now on display for all to see.

Former speaker of the House Dennis Hastert lived at 1119 Howard St. Speaker Hastert served 11 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was the longest serving Republican Speaker in history.

Graham

Evangelist Billy Graham lived at 712 Howard St. Mr. Graham attended Wheaton College from 1939 to 1943 and since then has become a spiritual advisor to every U.S. President from Harry Truman to Barack Obama. He is best known as an evangelist and it is said he has preached the Gospel to more people around the world than any person in history.

These are just a few of the notables you’ll discover. Go to the interactive map at the web link listed below and learn where people like John Belushi (comedian from SNL), Todd Beamer (hero from Flight 93), Wes Craven (horror films), Kenneth Taylor (author of Living Bible and founded Tyndale House), Bob Woodward (reporter and author) and many others.
